Cervical Spine Injuries

The human spinal column consists of 33 vertebrae separated into four regions. The cervical spine is the uppermost portion of the spine, which has the job of supporting the head. The cervical vertebrae are the bones of the neck. These vertebrae are labeled C1-C7. C1 is the topmost vertebrae, and is also referred to as the atlas. The atlas is part of the structure that connects the spine to the skull. The lower part of the neck attaches to the upper back, or thoracic spine. The lumbar spine links the upper back to the sacrum. The sacrum completes the spinal column ending with the tailbone.
