Pain elimination is usually the reason for spinal fusion surgery. It is a surgical procedure where two or more bones of the vertebrae surgically fused together by bone tissue from a donor or the patient. This procedure follows some back injuries to allow a patient to walk again. Fusing a spine may cause the patient the inability to bend over afterwards. Used also for treating a deformity that causes the spine to curl. Diseases like scoliosis. Other reasons for a spinal fusion would be fractures of the vertebrae, spinal tumors, scheuermanns disease or disc herniation. These fusions performed to treat painful problems and are usually in the lumbar area of the spine.

Two major kinds of Fusion are interbody fusion or posterolateral fusion. Interbody fusion requires that a disc removal surgery take place. Placement of a rod or something that will help in maintaining the body is erect posture. These devices usually made from either titanium or plastic. After this rod is placed, a fusion of endplates occurs which offers a 360 degrees fusion. A posterolateral fusion is positioning of screws used along with wire to attach a metal rod on either side of the vertebrae. It is unsure which surgery is preferred but both are to repair painful area of the spine that had resulted from an injury or deformity. The patient should be aware that it would take up to a year for healing. Therefore, they will possibly require some sort of braces to help with balance and movement as well as support. Expect pain and stiffness following surgery.

A Dissection happens when a herniated disc is presses on spinal cord and causes pain. The surgery is the act of removing this herniated disc to gain relief. During this surgery, the surgeon removes a piece of bone. This allows the surgeon easier access and the ability to repair the herniated disc. Reasons patients may fear they need this surgery is if they have low back pain, or severe leg pain, sometimes numbness. The physician may recommend non-surgical treatments at first. If the pain persists, the physician may suggest the discectomy. If there is loss of bowel or bladder, control or weakness of the legs appears as a symptom, schedule surgery. Bed rest for first day but the hospital will have you up walking within a few hours after surgery.

Both surgeries will have some pain after surgery. A slow recovery with some pain in the neck and arms is possible and expected. It is usually associated with some inflammation after surgery. All Patients should refrain from heavy lifting or any activity that may reverse the progress. Some patients claim that they had tingling or numbness in arms and fingers but eventually they go away.

Smoking is also bad with such post-surgery recovery. Follow up care should be caring for the incision and eventual therapy that is ordered. Some patients may go home with wheel chairs and others admitted to a skilled rehabilitation facility for therapy.

I have suffered from mild neck and back pain for many years. The pain originates from a series of injuries from car accidents to falls, even playing a little too rough with the kids. Over the years the mild injuries have piled up and now I have several different aches and pains to manage. I prefer home remedies to the more invasive doctor recommended procedures however when needed I do use them. I am a firm believer in managing pain as best as I can in natural ways so I have developed different techniques for coping.

What typically happens with me is that my neck will be the first place to start aching. Something as simple as mild fatigue can trigger the pain. I have found that when the neck pain hits the shoulder, head and arm pain soon follows. When this begins I like to do some mild stretches to loosen up my neck muscles. I have found that the same stretched we learned in elementary school are still effective today. Tilting my head to the left towards my shoulder gently I begin by rolling my neck slowly backwards until I have completed a half circle. Pausing there for several seconds I then continue my neck roll forward slowly and gently until I reach my original position. I repeat this process at least three times then I shake my shoulders out. This process helps to relieve tense muscles that easily tighten and tend to ache as a result. The next step in my stretching process is to wind my shoulders upward and backwards until they have made a complete 350 degree rotation. This process again helps to loosen neck and shoulder pain as well mild upper back pain.

I typically tend to complete this process 6 times then I shake my arms and hands out to ensure that my muscles do not tense up or spasm. By this time I can begin to feel the pressure loosen and I can start to relax. The next stretching I like to complete is to raise my hands to the sky palms up and bend slowly toward the ground keeping my posture straight but flexible. When my hands reach the ground I hold my palms as close to floor as I can get them with my neck and head pointing straight down. I hold this position for several seconds then I rise slowly making sure that posture remains straight yet flexible. I usually like to repeat that stretch 3 times.

By this time my body is usually pretty relaxed even though some pain still remains. This is a great time for me to sit down and apply an all naturally pain ointment. I have found that the Chinese mixtures are very effective at reducing pain and inflammation rather quickly. The best part is that they tend to be very affordable at the local superstore or pharmacy. By now I am feeling pretty good.

The final phase of my pain management includes sitting down to relaxing music or in total silence and meditating. I have found that during these times it’s best to keep light down to a minimum if not total darkness. I simply breathe in and out normally, through my nose. After several minutes my pain is usually gone. This process works for mild to moderate pain and can be done almost anywhere and anytime.

Acute lower back pain is pain that is common for many Americans and is the number two reason why many seek each year seek help from their doctor. Most back-related injuries occur at work; while some also occur in the home by lifting or pushing something that is too heavy. When a person first notices that they have severe lower back pain, they of course feel the pain; however, before a back injury occurs, certain structures in the back change and begin losing strength. Pain that comes with severe lower back pain is usually caused by an injury to the muscles and ligaments or caused by a strain or tear in the ligaments and muscles.

For those who suffer from severe lower back pain, symptoms vary from person to person. However, some of the symptoms that occur are pain that radiates down the side, front or back of your leg, pain that is centered in the lower back, increasing pain with activity, and pain worsening at night or by sitting too long in one position.

There are times when it is important for a person suffering from this condition to seek help.

Examples of such times are:
§ Trauma that has been recent such as falling from a certain height or being in a car accident
§ Being over 50 and falling down
§ Using steroids for many years
§ Person has a history of osteoporosis
§ Those older than 70
§ Suffering from a recent infection
§ Having a temperature of over 100 degrees
§ History of cancer
§ Weight loss that does not come from a special diet
§ IV drug use
§ Experiencing lower back pain at rest

Lower back pain is diagnosed by using several effective methods. Normally, a physician will start out by getting a complete medical history from the patient. Your physician will begin by asking questions like, “When and where did the pain begin?” “Did you lift something that was heavy and then felt pain?” Or, “Have you had any recent illnesses before the pain began?” Or, with women he or she might ask, “Have you had any vaginal concerns such as cramping or bleeding?”

Then, he or she will continue with a physical examination by checking your reflexes using a reflex hammer and will test your toes, heels and soles of your feet. Then, your doctor may check your abdomen, give a pelvic exam or a rectal exam. Next, your doctor may want some x-rays taken of your back to see if there are any signs of disease. In addition, your doctor may want you to have an MRI—a Magnetic resonance imaging. This kind of test is expensive but very helpful in diagnosing many kinds of pain—especially severe back pain. However, there can be side effects from an MRI such as bulging of the discs and a failure, at times, to diagnose ruptured discs. Other methods to diagnose acute back pain are nerve tests such as an EMG and blood tests such as Sedimentation rate or a complete blood count—done to check for elevations of white blood cells and anemia.

If a person wants to care for a severe back pain at him many doctors recommend to continue with normal daily activities but to get help when lifting, pushing or pulling are required. Also, some doctors recommend sleeping with a pillow between the knees while lying on one side. In addition, mild exercise is also recommended to help a person return to normal activities. Nonprescription medication is recommended to help ease the pain of this condtion such as Tylenol.

Spinal Stenosis is a disease that causes a person’s spine to become narrow in a lot of different places. Most of the time, this narrowing will occur in a person’s neck and lower back. This will eventually cause a compression in a person’s back because of the pressure that it being put on the spinal cord. The compression occurs a lot of times, a person will have some pain or numbness in the neck or back. There could also be some pain in a person’s legs, arms, and shoulders that the narrowing gets really bad. Usually a herniated disc, some form of arthritis that could be in a person’s back or neck, or a car accident injury is what will cause the spine to begin to narrow.

There are a few ways that a person can help to ease some of the pain of the spinal stenosis since it is a disease that a person cannot prevent from happening to them. The first way to exercise. A person will only have to exercise for about 30 minutes of their day. The exercise is very important because it can help to keep the spine moving like it is suppose to and help to build up some of a person’s strength that they need to their back muscles. The best exercises that a person can do to help their spinal stenosis to walking and running. This is because these exercises will help to balance out a person’s spine.

The second way is for a person to pay attention to what their body is telling them. This is means that a person who generally has some problems with their spine should practice keeping a good posture. A person should make sure that they have a firm mattress to sleep on every night to help align their spine properly. When they are sitting down, they should always sit up straight to keep their spine from curving. It is very important that when a person is lifting anything that they lift with their legs so that there back is protected from getting injured. Also try sleeping with a body pillow to help keep your spine aligned while you are in bed.

The third way is to make sure that you have a healthy body weight. This is because when a person is too heavy, that extra weight can put pressure on a person’s bones and joints. This means that a person needs to eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables. Plus the fruits and vegetables will help you to get all of the nutrition that you need to make your bones stronger. It is best to talk with your doctor to figure out the best diet plan for you and keep you safe while you are on this diet. You do not want to cause another problem by losing a lot of weight at one time but not getting any nutrition while you are losing the weight.

These are the top three ways that a person can help to ease their pain.

Lumbar Spine Arthritis, also known more commonly as Low Back Spinal Arthritis, is a common thing in older people but also younger people as well. This type of arthritis affects the lower back joints, or vertebrae, and makes it painful for the patient to even do simple tasks such as going from a sitting to a standing position. Although this horrible problem affects so many lives, there are ways in which a person can go about dealing with and stopping the pain. These exercises will allow you to get back up on your feet and enjoy life again.

The first tactic in which you can use to increase the strength of the lower back is through losing weight. The lower spine acts as a suppose system for the rest of the skeletal system so when this support system is overloaded with excess weight, it causes pain at the joints. Something as simple as maintaining a healthy diet and getting exercise will help you shed unwanted weight and help relieve pains. This simple adjustment to a persons life can drastically change and eliminate the pain associated with low back spinal arthritis.

One other way in which patients go about finding a solution to their low back problems is through physical therapy. Physical therapists will have you performing a wide variety of exercises that are targeted specifically to your needs of your problems. Such exercises as body weight squats are a perfect exercise to perform to put stress on the muscles located in the lower back to build strength and endurance in said muscles. This added strength and stamina will prove to make every day movements much easier and more fluid, thus preventing your pains and aches.

Another exercise that can be performed to allow more mobility of the lower back is the hip flexor stretch. This exercise is performed by having the client lay down on their back on a soft exercise or yoga mat. Then the individual will bring their knees up to their chest, or as close as possible without causing pain. When this exercise is performed with multiple reps it helps build and strengthen the core. The muscles surrounding the abdomen and around the lower back are referred to as the ‘core.’ The core muscles are basically your stability muscles that allow you to twist and move freely without having to turn your entire body when making a movement. The hip flexor stretch exercise will build up these core muscles in not only the lower back but the abdomen as well.

All in all, low back spinal arthritis pain doesn’t have to dictate your life and your actions. Trying the tips listed above will be sure to help you with your problems, if not cure them completely. Remember before performing any exercises to contact a health care physician to see if you’re healthy enough for exercise. Remember, a healthy diet and regular exercise will improve your quality of life ten fold and have you living happier than ever.

Meningitis usually occurs when a person’s immunity system can not control an infection and the infection infiltrates the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream the infection travels into the cerebrospinal fluid (this is the fluid that surrounds the brain and spine) causing inflammation and infection. There are generally two types of meningitis, bacterial meningitis and viral meningitis and both are considered to be contagious. The main difference between the two is viral meningitis is rarely life threatening and bacterial meningitis is a life threatening disease.

Viral meningitis is the most common form of meningitis and is an airborne disease that can be contracted through direct contact with an infected person. But unlike the bacterial form spinal meningitis can stay alive on objects that an infected person has come into contact with for several days. There are several virus that can lead to meningitis and most cases occur during the summer and fall seasons. The most common virus that can lead to meningitis is the enterovirus. Some other common known viruses are the herpes virus, Epstein-Barr virus, measles virus, influenza, and the varicella zoster virus commonly known as the chickenpox and shingle virus. During the summer months the arbovirus that is spread by mosquitoes is also known to cause meningitis.

Bacterial meningitis is also an airborne disease but it is not as contagious as viral meningitis, constant direct contact with an infected person is needed and is usually spread in settings such as dormitories, day care centers, and schools. Direct contact through coughing, sharing drinking cups or straws and kissing will greatly increase the chances of infection. There are several bacterias that can cause meningitis but the most common are streptococcus pneumoniae, neisseria meningitidis and haemophilus influenzae type b (hib). Vaccines are now given routinely for hib.

The symptoms for both viral and bacterial meningitis are the same with the first signs being a sudden high fever, severe headache and neck stiffness. Other common signs are vomiting, confusion, and sensitivity to light. Less common symptoms include joint swelling and pain, a rash and seizures. In children the symptoms include irritability, lack of appetite and the inability to arouse them from sleep. Because the symptoms of both forms of meningitis are so similar it is important to get immediate medical attention so proper medical treatment can be received.

There are several tests that will be performed to diagnose if meningitis is present and whether it is viral or bacterial meningitis. A blood culture will be drawn to test for any micro-organisms or bacterias within the blood stream. A CT scan of the brain will be ordered to check for swelling of the brain. A spinal tap (lumbar puncture) will be administered to draw cerebrospinal fluid for the presence of bacteria. Viral meningitis is treated with bed rest, and medication for the symptoms that are present. Bacterial meningitis is aggressively treated with antibiotics and usually hospitalization is required.

Discogenic back pain is a condition in which the disc slowly deteriorates and is the most common type of chronic lower back pain. The symptoms are felt in the lower back and it usually worsens when your spine is compressed during cretin activities. Even everyday a activities like sitting or bending can tend to bring this pain on, while some find lying down tends to relieve it. There are many treatments for discogenic back pain.
Most of the time discogenic back pain will subside on its own and may even come and go. Normally the first type of treatment used to control the pain is anti-inflammatory along with using ice and or heat packs. Anti-inflammatory is an effective pain relief without surgery. The anti-inflammatory drug is a group of medications used to decrease pain. You can purchase some anti-inflammatory over the counter or your doctor may give you a prescription. You may already have some of the non-presciption anti-inflammatory medications in your medicine cabinet and they are Aspirin, Ibuprophen, and Aleve.
Some doctors may also have their patients try physical therapy. Physical therapy may also consist of back exercises or traction. Traction is a modality treatment that a physical therapists or chiropractor may give to their patients. This procedure is done to try and apply force that draws two adjacent bones from each other in order to increase their shared joint space. Exercises and therapy is important because this treatment increases the strength and flexibility of the back muscles. This helps distribute the weight better and there is less force placed on the spine.
Epidural steroid shots are a common treatment for managing discogenic back pain. This is delivered to the area between the vertebrae and the outer covering of the spinal cord. This treatment is usually tried after conservation; non-invasive treatments have not proven successful. This is normally the last step before the doctors will consider surgery.
Some doctors are trying a new invasive surgery known as Intradiscal Electrothermal Therapy. This procedure cauterizes the nerves so that the tear fuses together and the never endings die. Once those endings die, you will not be able to feel the discogenic back pain. This fairly a new study has proven to be successful for patents with discogenic back pain.
However, there is one surgery that is done and is the most common and that is spinal fusion. This surgery is performed to link together individual segments or vertebrae in the spine. There are some concerns with this surgery, but overall the procedure works very well for the most patients. Spinal fusion has been around for some time, but some say it does not always provide relief to their patient.
If you have been diagnosed with discogenic back pain you will find that there are many treatment options for you. You and your doctor will have to decide what treat is best for you. Choosing the right treatment for your pain management can determine your abilities to have a pain free life.

The spinal cord is one of the most important parts the body. This particular part of the body provides the alignment and support for the body. With the spinal cord, people have a part of the body that will enable them to stand and walk upright at all times. As a result, the spinal cord has a great deal of significance in a person’s ability to function normally. With the spinal cord there are many levels that make up the overall structure of the back. These levels each have a specific function that they help regulate throughout the entire body.

With the spinal cord there are certain levels that make up its structure and function. The first level of the spinal cord is the cervical and vertebral segments. This part of the spinal cord consists of the top portion of the back and up to the neck. This part of the spinal cord supports the upper portion of the back and helps support the neck as well. This is one of the very most important levels of the spinal cord because it keeps a vital part of the body well supported.

The next level of the spinal cord is the Thoracic. With the Thoracic level of spinal cord you get the middle portion of the vertebrae. This is another very important level of the spinal cord because it helps support most of the back. By supporting the central portion of the back, you will have the ability to maintain good posture and stand upright. The Thoracic level of the spinal cord covers approximately 35% of the spinal cord so it makes up a considerable portion of the overall structure of this vital part of the body.

Another level of the spinal cord is the lumbar section. The lumbar level the spinal cord is located just under the thoracic level. It is a smaller part to the spinal cord but still a vital part of it. This level of the spinal cord is located in the central lower portion of the spinal cord. With this level of the spinal cord, people have another part that helps regulate posture and functions such as standing and walking.

Next is the sacral level of the spinal cord. This part of the spinal cord is the lowest portion of of the vertebrae and is also quite important to the overall structure and function of the back. The sacral level is located below all of the other levels and extends from the lumbar level to the waist. Like all of the other levels of the spinal cord, the sacral level helps regulate movement and the ability for a person to function well physically.

One of the most important aspects of the spinal cord’s structure and function is dermatones. The dermatones are a part of the skin that is supplied by certain nerve fibers to provide some protection of the spinal cord. This is vital because it regulates sensory of the nerves and also helps regulate the overall function of much of the body such as reactions and movements. The spinal cord levels and dermatones are among the more important aspects of the body’s structure and function.

Chronic nerve pain is something that millions of people all over the world deal with on a day to day basis. Modern medicine however has discovered a way in which a patient can not only live with chronic nerve pain but also live as though they didn’t have this medical issue what so ever. The process in which this is possible is called nerve blocking. Essentially what your physician will do is locate the area in which your pain is coming from and inject an anesthetic into the nerves around the problem nerves to mask the pain. This is one of the most effective ways in which you can not only relieve the pain but also do so in a non-invasive and safe manner.

The first thing any individual that suffers with chronic nerve pain will want to do is locate and asses the pain they’re dealing with. Often times people will feel as though they have chronic nerve pain when in reality there might be another medical issue involved. One of the symptoms that will be the biggest indicator that you’ve got a nerve problem is lightheadedness. If you have a combination of feeling light headed and dizzy as well as chronic pain over a period of time, then this is a red flag that you’ve a nerve related medical issue. In conjunction with the lightheadedness, sweating is also commonly associated as one of the symptoms with nerve issues. If you find yourself not only having constant pain in the neck, back, or other common areas of nerve damage with sudden bouts of profuse sweating then this also might be an indicator that you’re dealing with nerve issues. You’ll want to notify your physician of these symptoms as they’re a bold indicator that you have nerve damage and chronic nerve pain.

Many patients that find themselves dealing with nerve pain often ask themselves as to why they have this issue in the first place? One of the leading reasons as to why people all over the world deal with chronic nerve pain is because of cancer. Cancerous cells, as you may not know, buildup rapidly in an area of the body and start to attack the surrounding area. This buildup of cells often times pushes up against nerves in the area in which the cancer is located and this can and will cause chronic nerve pain. Although cancer might seem very scary, most of the time chronic aches and pains from nerves are due to trauma or being injured. If you’ve ever been in an accident or been injured some way, it’s pretty safe to say you might have experienced some nerve damage. Many patients that have been in an accident or have been injured undergo nerve block procedures in order to relieve the pain from injured nerves.

All in all, if you’ve got chronic nerve pain then you should talk to your doctor about nerve block. Never block will have you feeling fresh and new all over again!

An Epidural Steroid Injection, or (ESI) is a very common type of injection into the spinal cavity, for the relief of certain kinds of pain, swelling and inflammation. It is widely known as a “nerve block” and is used in treating back pain of the lower lumbar region of the spine. This sort of treatment is normally used; only after, other non-surgical methods have shown no relief.

Specifically, an ESI is an injection of a steroid and a long-lasting anesthetic combination injected into epidural space. Since steroids normally take longer to take effect, an anesthetic is given for immediate pain relief. ESIs are used for radicular pain, which is called “sciatica” pain. Sciatica is nerve pain that generates and travels down the corresponding side of the body, generally down the arm or leg. More over, a condition called Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal, which in turns cuts off the nerve at the spinal cord which then causes pain, is also treated with ESI. In addition to lower lumber pain relief, ESIs are used to treat cervical and thoracic conditions, such as, nerve compression in the neck and the mid-spine area. If inflammation is chronic and not treated fibrotic changes, edema and wallerian degeneration of the neural tissue can occur, resulting in permanent damage. Other conditions that are treated by ESIs are not limited to, but include, lumbar disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, compression fractures, annular tears, and lumbar spinal stenosis.

How are Spinal Epidural Steroid Injections performed?

ESIs are safe and done only by a medically licensed doctor with little or no sedation, on an outpatient basis only. During the procedure, a small needle is inserted into the spinal canal with the guidance of an imaging mechanism, such as, an MRI, fluoroscope or x-ray machine for placement of the needle. The steroid is then released into, usually the LS-S1 disc of the spinal cord. The whole procedure takes about 30-40 minutes and an hour of recovery time afterwards. Sometimes, ESIs are not enough pain relief and a regimen of physical therapy is needed in conjunction with the injection. Remember ESIs are only temporary in relieving pain. These injections are effective from about 3 to 4 weeks. After an injection pain relief is normally felt in a day, but can range up to a week in other cases. A doctor will usually prolong the next injection for 2 months after the first, but many experts recommend giving the patient no more then three injections annually. In addition, there is a variety of ESI injections designed for a particular part of the spinal cord region. Tranforaminal ESIs, commonly known as nerve blocks, deliver medication into the neural sleeve; the medicine then travels along the cavity space and goes into the epidural space from the sides. With an interlaminar ESI, or “epidural injection” the medication is injected into the epidural cavity itself. Side effects are usually of minimal discomfort and will subside in two to four days.
