Osteoarthritis of the Spine

Arthritis is a condition that can affect any joint in the body. Tenderness, pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints are common symptoms. Arthritis also causes abnormalities in soft tissues surrounding an affected joint. Arthritis is a significant contributor to physical disabilities and approximately 50 million Americans have some form. Arthritis is not just a disease of the old, either. Almost 500,000 children suffer from some form. There are several types of arthritis, but the most common is osteoarthritis, or arthritis of the bones. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint including those of the spine, and osteoarthritis of the spine is one of the most common causes of back pain.
